Friday, April 28, 2006Midnight Quietude
Greetings from Linden Avenue. At this moment, all three residents are ensconced in the living room; a rare occasion given Chestnut's day job and Tumble's night school (Tumble, in a fit of wine-fueled restlessness last week, tacked a Community College of Allegheny County catalog to a dartboard and wound up with a night-school trifecta of Comparative Lit, Beginner's Jazz and Jet-Ski Safety). At the moment, Chestnut whistles through his nose from the faraway land of REM sleep curled into the barcalounger as the last track on Bookends winds down, something he threw on to calm himself after watching the Tampa Bay Devil Rays lose on TV (a team he only started rooting for because a cute girl at work sported a shirt of theirs last week). At the far end of the couch, Tumble trods through An American Tragedy with a brow knitted into early-20th-Century torment. I'm giving five more minutes before I look up to see that book replaced with an MGD tall-boy and a copy of Calvin & Hobbes. As for myself, I have just returned from the front door where our old paperboy just offered to sell me weed. It's a quiet night with just the right amount of nothing happening, where I can hear the echo of my typing and recognize it for the busywork it is. Goodnight for now, -F
